Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Leaders from Around the World Present Proven Conservation Solutions Amid Mounting Industrial Pressures on Tropical Forests

COP 30 Press Conference In Person and Livestream,

Nov. 18, 11 - 11:30am BRT

Indigenous Peoples and local communities leaders from the world’s largest forest basins will convene at this official COP30 press conference to address escalating fossil fuel and industrial pressures across tropical forests and spotlight Indigenous Peoples and local communities-led pathways to regeneration.

Speaking at the press conference will be co-authors of a new report by the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC) and Earth Insight — Indigenous Peoples’ Territories and Local Communities on the Frontlines: Mapping Threats and Solutions Across the World's Largest Tropical Forests — which exposes the vast scale of industrial threats from oil, gas, mining, logging, and large-scale agriculture across the Amazon, Congo Region, Indonesia, and Mesoamerica. These regions are home to 35 million Indigenous Peoples and local communities safeguarding forests vital to global climate stability and biodiversity.

Speakers will call for widespread support of the The Answer is Us Campaign, Brazzaville Declaration, and GATC’s Five Demands: secure land rights, guarantee free, prior, and informed consent, ensure direct financing, protect defenders, and integrate traditional knowledge into global policy.
